This is the place I will cover the stats of each country as we go.

Anyway, let's get into it:

Greece: 5-15/10/23

Tracks:

Rough rules: I will count the flight (or bus) TO that country as tracks IN that country.

Planes:

  • Brisbane - Abu Dhabi - Athens = 15,276 km

Automobiles:

  • Athens Airport - Piraeus Port = 50 km
  • Driving around Milos = maximum 20 km

Boats:

  • Piraeus - Paros = 189 km
  • Paros - Milos = 75 km
  • Milos - Mykonos = 112 km

Walking:

  • 69.2 km

Total = 15,791.2 km

Expenses:

Rough rules: I will count the flight (or bus) TO that country as an expense IN that country.

Total expense: $6,540.13 AUD

Total Days: 11 Days inclusive

Expense per day = $594.55 AUD/Day

Culinary Corner by a Non-Foodie:

  • Paros = Pepe’s Souvlaki for the Gyros; Dionysus Garden for a nice dinner
  • Milos = Utopia Cafe to watch the sun going down just an epic view
  • Mykonos = Meh. Wherever.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Taxis from Athens airport can be booked with the Uber app.
  • Inter-island ferries work flawlessly, for Greece.
  • Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, Milos are the islands you should go to. Mykonos had minimum three enormous cruise ships disgorging fat old people into the old town all day. I would imagine Santorini and Crete are similar. So if you are not going to the Greek Islands for the partying, then go for the smaller, quieter islands.
  • Towards the end of October, the tourist season is coming to a close. Shops are literally shuttering for the off season. Just to be aware. We were always able to find somewhere to eat and stay, however.

Recommendations:

  • These Greek islands have small town centres. Staying outside the centre is nice and quiet, but you will have to walk every day.
  • Hire a car for a day or two and roam around looking for fun beaches.
  • Paros and Milos were better than Mykonos. Mykonos is dirty. Milos and Paros are clean and quiet.
  • On Milos, go to the church at the top of Plaka for the view and have a drink at sunset at Utopia Cafe - it is that good.
  • Milos = Sarakiniko Beach for cool landscape white rocks and jumping off the rock arch.

Summary:

  • We really only did a few Greek Islands. Not mainland. We had a great time swimming around the beaches.
  • Smaller, quieter islands are best. If in doubt, pick an island that cruise ships don’t dock in.
  • Driving is not too bad, there are some insanely tight little village roads at times, but all the hire cars are tiny.
