Costs of Doing Business - 2024/5 Medical Year

Bottom Line Up Front:
$10,492 to show up for work this year
AHPRA Registration Renewal - $1027
- Mandatory
- Pay money to unelected random office people to maintain a spreadsheet of names and registration numbers
- Doctors pay more than physios, nurses etc
- Because it costs more money to enter our details into a spreadsheet because reasons
Mater Short Course - $1,300
- Not quite mandatory
- But it’s seen as a suggested investment into exam preparation
Transthoracic Echocardiography Course - $750
- Mandatory
- Literally a requirement for Intensive Care Training in Australia
- $750 is the cheapest you’ll ever get one
CICM Annual Trainee Member Fee - $2,040
- Mandatory
- Cannot train in Intensive Care otherwise
CICM Part One Exam Application Fee - $5,375
- I paid the fee this medical year, but don’t actually sit until March
- It’s an exam handwritten on paper, not carved in gold
- Naturally, mandatory
- And if you do well enough…..you get the grand prize of having to fly to Melbourne to sit the verbal part of the exam…
Caveat: Naturally, I am happy to participate in my own existence; and none of this is truly mandatory. I could just lay down in a ditch.
But if you want Australian-trained specialists looking after you…
